Ten Pompeii day trips from Rome compared on price, hours in transit, time at the ruins and what else you see, from a €56 coach day to a high-speed train tour with a winery lunch and small-group days on the Amalfi Coast.
What You Should Know
- A Pompeii day trip from Rome is a 9 to 13 hour day: about 240 km each way to a guided walk of roughly two hours in the ruins, often paired with Positano, Sorrento, Vesuvius or Herculaneum.
- Coaches leave Piazza del Popolo or Piazzale Flaminio between 06:10 and 08:30 and spend about three hours on the road each way. Train tours leave Termini at 08:00 or 09:15; the high-speed train takes about 70 minutes to Naples, then a minibus about 30 minutes to Pompeii.
- Prices run from €56 for a guided coach day to €213 to €249 by high-speed train. Adding Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast costs €92.99 to €199 with a guide on a group coach (€76 for Show Me Italy's ticket-only option), and €288 per person for two in a six-seat minivan.
- The combined Pompeii and Amalfi days trade depth for coverage: recent guests report about 90 minutes in the ruins and as little as an hour in Positano, against the two hours each that the listings advertise.
Pompeii Day Trips From Rome: What You Are Actually Choosing Between
A Pompeii day trip from Rome costs between €56 and €288 per person, and the price mostly decides one thing: how many of your hours are spent on a road. Pompeii is about 240 km south of Rome. The coach tours cover that in roughly three hours each way, so a guided walk of about two hours in the ruins sits inside a 12 to 13 hour day. The train tours take the high-speed line to Naples in about 70 minutes and finish the trip by minibus, which turns the same two hours in Pompeii into a 9 to 11 hour day for about twice the price.
This guide compares ten of the best-reviewed day trips from Rome to Pompeii, every one reviewed by guests in the past month, on what actually changes your day: transit time, how long you get in the ruins, what else is bundled in, group size, and what you will still pay on the day. Five keep the focus on Pompeii, adding a winery lunch, Mount Vesuvius or Herculaneum. The other five are day trips from Rome to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii, which add a few hours in Positano or Sorrento at the cost of a longer, faster day. If you are spending more time in the city, our Rome food tour comparison covers the evening after, our Rome golf cart tour guide covers the sights in a morning, and our Rome travel guides list everything else. Heading north to Tuscany too? The Cinque Terre day trip from Florence is the coastal equivalent there.

We checked each listing's cancellation policy: all ten give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, and nothing after that. Five may be cancelled by the operator if too few people book, and the Herculaneum tour can be cancelled for bad weather, with a refund in each case. Always confirm the details with the operator before booking.

Our take (two hours is an overview): Pompeii covers about 66 hectares, and no guided tour on this page sees more than a fraction of it. Most people don't realize how little signage there is: Pompeii has very few panels explaining what you are looking at, so the guide does most of the work. Guests who enjoyed their day treat the guided walk as an overview of the highlights; guests who were disappointed expected to see the amphitheatre, the outlying villas or the whole site. If you want depth, the self-guided Pompeii Express gives you about five hours, and the Herculaneum tour adds a second, more compact site.
Our take (hearing the guide): The most common complaint about the coach tours is not the guide's knowledge but the sound. Headsets that cut out and guides who move on before the back of the group arrives come up repeatedly in recent City Wonders and Welcome Italy reviews. Stay near the front in Pompeii, and test your headset before you set off.
One honest caveat: these are long days on foot on rough Roman paving, and most operators say so. ItaliaTours, Walks and The Tour Guy state that their tours are not suitable for wheelchairs or for guests who need walking assistance, and Walks does not allow strollers. If mobility is a concern, Welcome Italy's minivan tour with hotel pickup is the gentlest option here, and it is worth contacting the operator before booking.
Best Pompeii Day Trips From Rome, Reviewed
Ten tours, grouped by what each one does best. Before comparing guides or menus, we would settle two questions: train or coach, and Pompeii alone or Pompeii with the coast. Those two choices decide how long your day is, how much of it you spend in the ruins, and roughly what you pay. Ratings and review counts are current as of November 3, 2026.
A word on ratings: long coach days from Rome score lower than almost any other tour type, because a delay, a weak headset or a traffic jam on the way home lands on a 13-hour day. The big coach operators here sit between 4.5 and 4.6 with about three quarters of reviews at five stars; the train tours sit at 4.8 to 4.9 with closer to 90%. That gap is mostly the format, not the guides.
ItaliaTours: Pompeii by High-Speed Train with Wine & Lunch
4.8 from 1,663 reviews, 88% of them five stars, and the most comfortable way to see Pompeii in a day from Rome. You meet at Termini for the 09:15 high-speed train, reach Naples in about 70 minutes, and take a minibus to the ruins for a skip-the-line guided walk of about two hours. Afterwards you sit down at a nearby winery for four Vesuvius wines with antipasti, a pasta course and dessert. Groups are capped at 20. The tradeoffs: lunch comes late, after the tour, so eat breakfast; the guided route covers the main streets, houses and baths rather than the whole site; and because the day runs on train times, a late arrival at Termini or a rail delay can cost you the trip. At about €213 it costs more than twice the cheapest coach day.
Check availabilityCity Wonders: Pompeii from Rome with Optional Vesuvius
The cheapest guided Pompeii day trip from Rome, with 6,553 reviews behind its 4.6. The €56 option is a coach from Piazza del Popolo, a skip-the-line ticket and a two-hour licensed guide, then time to explore on your own. Options add a geologist-led nature walk on Vesuvius (€91), which stays on the lower slopes and does not climb to the crater, or the crater hike with a pizza lunch (€105), about 20 minutes uphill on a 14 degree slope. Recent reviews praise the guides and the Vesuvius drivers, but several found the time in Pompeii brief, and crater trails can close in high wind or between November and March. On a rainy day in early November, one group was taken to Sorrento instead, and in September a guest whose semi-private booking was cancelled was moved onto a coach of 52.
Check availabilityCity Wonders: Pompeii, Amalfi Coast & Positano
The most-reviewed Pompeii and Amalfi day in this comparison, with 7,271 reviews. A two-hour guided walk in Pompeii, the drive along the Amalfi Coast and free time in Positano, back in central Rome around 20:30. It is the lowest-rated tour here at 4.5, and the low reviews are consistent: Positano time of about an hour to 1h20 rather than the advertised two hours, headsets cutting out in Pompeii, and returns as late as 22:00 to midnight in traffic. If you want both places in one day on a budget, this is it; just plan on a long, tightly run day.
Check availabilityWalks: Pompeii & Amalfi Coast Day Trip
An archaeologist-led Pompeii tour in groups of up to 18, then the Amalfi Coast drive and free time in Positano from April to October or Sorrento from November to March. Rated 4.6 from 2,038 reviews. The listing allows three hours at Pompeii, but one October 2026 guest reports about 90 minutes and another missed the plaster casts, so tell your guide early if they are a priority. The minibus is shared by up to two groups (36 people). No strollers or luggage, and every guest needs photo ID matching the booking name. Past guests have waited at the wrong spot on Piazzale Flaminio, where several Pompeii operators meet at the same hour, so look for the yellow WalksDevour sign.
Check availabilityShow Me Italy: Pompeii & Sorrento Day Trip
The best-rated budget coach day at 4.8 from 633 reviews, 87% five stars. The guided option includes a 75-minute tour of the Forum, baths, Lupanar, House of the Faun and the plaster casts, then two hours in Sorrento with a drink by the sea, and the published timetable has you back in Rome around 19:00, earlier than most. The €76 version includes the ticket but no guide. Arrive 20 minutes early at Piazzale Flaminio: late arrivals are not refunded, and guests report that the coach leaves together whichever start time you book. Guides in languages other than English are not guaranteed; two French-speaking groups in 2026 were told the evening before that no French guide was available. We'd give this the edge over the City Wonders Positano day for most budget travellers: it is rated higher, Sorrento is flatter and closer to Pompeii, and you are back about 90 minutes earlier.
Check availabilityThe Tour Guy: Pompeii, Amalfi & Positano or Sorrento
You choose Positano or Sorrento at checkout, get 90 minutes there with a limoncello tasting, then a two-hour Pompeii tour with an archaeologist. Rated 4.6 from 238 reviews. The catch is scale: the group tour takes up to 50 guests, the largest on this page, and the operator warns the order of the day can be reversed. Priced in US dollars, about €121 at today's rate. We wouldn't choose this one if big groups bother you: with up to 50 on the coach, it is the tour where staying within earshot of the guide in Pompeii takes the most effort.
Check availabilityItaliaTours: Pompeii Express by High-Speed Train
The same train and minibus as our top pick, but no guide: you get a skip-the-line ticket and about five hours in Pompeii on your own, more than double the guided tours. Recent guests describe being handed highlighted maps and met again at a set time for the ride back. 4.8 from 113 reviews. The €142 Plus option adds the outlying villas, including the Villa of the Mysteries. We'd book this if you have read up on Pompeii beforehand: the site has very few signs explaining what you are looking at, which is exactly why one recent guest on our top pick said they were glad to have had a guide.
Check availabilityItaliaTours: Pompeii & Herculaneum by Train with Pizza Lunch
The highest-rated tour here at 4.9 from 136 reviews, 93% five stars. Two guided tours of about two hours each, Pompeii in the morning and Herculaneum in the afternoon, with a pizzeria lunch in between, all by high-speed train. Herculaneum is less than half Pompeii's size but better preserved, with wooden structures and frescoes. Runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays only, from 08:00. We'd lean toward this over the winery tour for history-focused travellers: for €36 more and two extra hours, you swap the wine lunch for a second site.
Check availabilityThe Tour Guy: Pompeii & Mt Vesuvius with Lunch
A 90-minute archaeologist-led walk through Pompeii, a three-course lunch with pizza on the slopes of Vesuvius, then a volcanologist-led hike to the crater (about a kilometre with 140 metres of climb). Rated 4.8, but from only 45 reviews. The operator asks for a high level of fitness, and the crater trail depends on the weather. A second option swaps the crater hike for a gentler archaeologist-led walk on the volcano, which does not go to the rim, for about €162. We'd only choose this if you are fit and travelling between spring and autumn: the climb is steep, and one May 2026 booking was cancelled by the operator a few days before.
Check availabilityWelcome Italy: Amalfi Coast & Pompeii, Small Group or Private
Hotel pickup in a minivan with no more than six guests, a two-hour guided Pompeii tour, about three hours in Positano, and a second coast town such as Amalfi, Maiori or Vietri sul Mare with limoncello. Rated 4.8 from 626 reviews. Pricing is per person by group size: €288 each for two on the shared tour, falling to €208 from ten guests; the private version starts at €468 each for two. In winter, when much of Positano closes, another coast town is visited instead. The tradeoff is time in the van: one April guest estimated about 60% of the day on the road, and two others found the long drives quiet, with little commentary on what you pass.
Check availabilityIf Pompeii is the reason you are going, take a train tour and keep the coast for another day. If you want to see both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one trip from Rome, budget for a 13-hour day and go in expecting about 90 minutes in each place.
How to Get from Rome to Pompeii: Train vs Guided Tour
There are three ways to make the trip: a guided tour by high-speed train, a guided tour by coach, or the train on your own. The guided tours reach Pompeii one of two ways, and it changes the whole shape of the day.
| High-speed train tours | Coach and minibus tours | |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves Rome | Roma Termini, 08:00 to 09:15 | Piazza del Popolo or Piazzale Flaminio, 06:10 to 08:30 |
| Each way | About 70 min by train, plus 30 min by minibus from Naples | About 3 hrs, with a coffee stop |
| Total day | 9 to 11 hrs | 12 to 13 hrs |
| Price | €133 to €249 | €56 to €288 |
| Main risk | A late arrival or rail delay can mean missing the train | Traffic on the way home; long hours seated |
| Best for | Pompeii as the main event; anyone who gets car sick | Lower budgets; adding Positano, Sorrento or Vesuvius |
The train tours are all run by ItaliaTours and meet at Caffè Vergnano inside Termini station, on the departures level facing track 1. Being on time matters more here than on a coach: the group boards a specific train, and recent low reviews come from guests who arrived late or went to the wrong Caffè Vergnano (there is another near the Vatican). You are back at Termini in the early evening.
The coach tours meet at Piazza del Popolo (City Wonders) or Piazzale Flaminio (Walks, Show Me Italy, The Tour Guy), next to each other at the top of Via del Corso and a short walk from Flaminio metro on Line A. Departures are early, from 06:10, and most coaches stop once each way for coffee and toilets. This is where the coach tours really differ from the train: three operators gather groups on Piazzale Flaminio at the same hour, and past guests have ended up waiting with the wrong company, so look for your operator's sign or flag rather than the first crowd you see. The Amalfi days add the coast road, whose hairpin bends are worth knowing about if you get motion sickness.
Going on your own by train
Pompeii is easy to reach without a tour if you are happy to change trains and find your own way round the site:
- Rome to Naples: a high-speed Trenitalia or Italo train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes about 70 minutes. Fares change with the date and how early you book.
- Naples to Pompeii: go down to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, the Circumvesuviana station on the lower level of Napoli Centrale, and take a Sorrento-line train to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, a few minutes' walk from the Porta Marina entrance. It takes about 35 minutes, costs about €3.30 each way, and runs roughly every 20 to 30 minutes. Do not get off at the modern town's Pompei station, which is on a different line.
- Tickets: a standard Pompeii ticket costs €20 (Pompeii+ €25) since 12 January 2026, sold for timed entry slots with a daily visitor cap, so book ahead in busy months.
Done this way, the trip costs well under the guided train tours if you book the high-speed train early, and you choose your own hours in the ruins. What you give up is the guide, which matters more at Pompeii than at most sites because there is so little signage, and the help with connections: the Circumvesuviana is a busy commuter line, and a delay on either train is yours to manage. We would go independently if you have been to Pompeii before or plan to read up first, and book a guided tour for a first visit.
The Route: Rome to Pompeii by Road (Interactive Map)
The red line is the coach route from Piazza del Popolo to the Porta Marina entrance at Pompeii: about 242 km, almost all of it on the A1 motorway south past Cassino, then around Naples to the coast. Without traffic the drive takes about two and a half hours; with a coffee stop and the traffic into Rome on the way back, the tours allow about three hours each way. The blue line is the extra leg the Amalfi Coast days add, about 36 km over the Sorrento peninsula to Positano, which takes well over an hour on the winding coast road.
| Leg | Distance | Typical time on a tour | Which tours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rome to Pompeii by coach | About 242 km | About 3 hrs with a coffee stop | All coach and minibus tours |
| Rome to Naples by high-speed train | Rail | About 70 min, plus 30 min by minibus to Pompeii | The three ItaliaTours train tours |
| Pompeii to Positano | About 36 km | Over an hour on the coast road | City Wonders, Walks, The Tour Guy and Welcome Italy coast days |
| Pompeii to Sorrento | About 27 km | About an hour | Show Me Italy, The Tour Guy (Sorrento option), Walks in winter |
Vesuvius and Herculaneum sit right beside the route, between Naples and Pompeii, which is why they pair so easily with a Pompeii day. Positano is the opposite: it is past Pompeii, on a slower road, so every hour in Positano is paid for with time on the bus.
Pompeii Only, or Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast?
Half the tours here are Pompeii and Amalfi Coast day trips from Rome. They are popular for an obvious reason: two of southern Italy's biggest sights in one booking. They also generate most of the complaints on this page, for an equally obvious reason: Positano is about 36 km beyond Pompeii on a slow, winding road, and the extra distance comes out of your time at each stop.
Based on recent reviews, here is what a combined day usually delivers: about 90 minutes to two hours in Pompeii, enough for the main forum, streets, baths and a house or two, and one to three hours in Positano or Sorrento. The coast road itself is the highlight for many guests. What gets squeezed is the walking time in Pompeii and any chance of a sit-down lunch. From what we've seen in reviews and operator details, Pompeii is rarely what makes these days run late; it is the coast road and the evening motorway back into Rome.
- Choose Pompeii only if the ruins are the point, you want a guide who is not watching the clock, or you would rather add Vesuvius or Herculaneum, which are next door.
- Choose Pompeii and the coast if this is your only trip south and seeing Positano matters more than seeing all of Pompeii.
- Positano or Sorrento? Positano is the postcard, a steep village of stairs down to the beach, and it is hard on tired legs after Pompeii. Sorrento is flatter, closer to Pompeii and easier to enjoy in two hours. Several operators switch to Sorrento in winter anyway.
Best Time for a Pompeii Day Trip From Rome
All ten tours run year-round, but not always with the same itinerary. Positano is swapped for Sorrento or another coast town in winter, the Vesuvius crater trails close in high wind and often between November and March, summer traffic restrictions on the Amalfi Coast can reorder the day, and the Herculaneum tour runs four days a week. Pompeii itself has almost no shade, so the season matters more for comfort than for availability.
Every departure runs and the coast is at its best, but the ruins are hot and exposed, and recent summer guests describe heat well over 30°C on the stones. Traffic to and from the Amalfi Coast is at its worst, with local restrictions that can change the itinerary.
Comfortable walking weather, long days and Positano fully open. Our pick of the year, especially for the combined Amalfi days, which need daylight and an open village to work well.
Cooler, emptier ruins and the best time for a Pompeii-only day. Shorter daylight and much of Positano closed: Walks switches to Sorrento and Welcome Italy visits another coast town. The Vesuvius crater trails may close in high wind or bad weather.
In summer we would book a train tour, which puts you in the ruins late morning and seated at a table by mid-afternoon, rather than a coach day that stacks heat on top of six hours of road.
How Much Does a Pompeii Day Trip From Rome Cost?
A guided day trip to Pompeii from Rome costs from €56 on a coach to €249 by high-speed train at current prices, and €288 per person for two on a small-group Amalfi day. Every tour here includes return transport and your Pompeii entry ticket. What changes is the guide, the transport, and whether lunch is in the price.
City Wonders Pompeii (€56) and Pompeii and Positano (€99), Show Me Italy (€76 ticket only, €92.99 guided) and The Tour Guy coast day (€121). Coach both ways, a guide in Pompeii, no lunch except on City Wonders' lunch options. The best value if you are happy with a 12 to 13 hour day.
ItaliaTours' Pompeii Express (€133, no guide), our top pick with a winery lunch (€213) and Pompeii with Herculaneum and pizza (€249). Shorter days and seated travel. The €213 tour includes a full lunch with wine, which narrows the real gap with the coach days.
The Tour Guy's Vesuvius day (€132), Walks' archaeologist-led Amalfi day (€199) and Welcome Italy's six-seat minivan with hotel pickup (€288 per person for two). You pay for smaller groups, hotel pickup or a second guided site.
Budget about €20 to €30 per person for lunch on the coach days that do not include it, and more in Positano. Coach prices change by date, so check a few days before you commit.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing in recent reviews is that the combined Pompeii and Amalfi days disappoint people on time, not quality: the guides and the coast get praise, but guests repeatedly count about 90 minutes in Pompeii and an hour or so in Positano against the two hours each they expected.
Tips for Your Pompeii Day Trip From Rome
- Find the right meeting point the day before. ItaliaTours meets at the Caffè Vergnano inside Termini, on the departures level facing track 1, not the one near the Vatican. The coach tours meet at Piazza del Popolo or Piazzale Flaminio; check which on your ticket.
- Be early for the train. ItaliaTours asks you to arrive 30 minutes before the 09:15 departure, and the group boards a specific train. Allow extra time on marathon or strike days, when getting across Rome is slower.
- Confirm the day before. Show Me Italy sends a WhatsApp confirmation the day before, and Welcome Italy asks you to call to confirm your pickup time. Operators do merge quiet departures and change guides at short notice, especially for non-English languages and add-ons such as Vesuvius, so a quick check saves surprises at 7am.
- Give every name if you add Vesuvius. City Wonders requires all passenger names at booking for the Vesuvius options, or entry can be refused.
- Bring photo ID. Pompeii tickets are issued in each visitor's name. Walks and City Wonders both ask for ID, including for children.
- Wear proper shoes and a hat. Pompeii is paved with large, uneven volcanic stones and has very little shade. Guests in summer repeatedly mention the heat; guests in every season mention their feet.
- Carry water. There are drinking fountains inside the site, and the better guides stop at them, but bring a bottle to refill.
- Eat breakfast. On the winery tour, lunch comes after the Pompeii walk, in mid-afternoon. On the coach days without lunch, City Wonders suggests bringing food in winter, when options are limited.
- Take motion sickness tablets for the Amalfi Coast. The coast road is all hairpin bends, and guests on the Positano days mention it.
- Know what your option includes. City Wonders, Show Me Italy and The Tour Guy sell several versions under one listing. The cheapest Show Me Italy option has no guide, and City Wonders' lunch and Vesuvius come only with the dearer options.
- Prioritise the plaster casts. On the shorter guided walks they are the sight guests most regret missing. Tell your guide at the start if they matter to you.
- Stay near the front in Pompeii. Hearing the guide is the most common complaint on the larger groups.
How We Selected These Tours
The Italy Trip Insider team searched every Pompeii day trip that departs from Rome and shortlisted those with the most reviews and the strongest ratings, across train, coach, small-group and private formats. We cut anything without recent guest feedback: one well-known private tour was excluded because its newest review is from June 2025, and a train tour listed as departing Naples was left out. All ten tours here were reviewed by guests in the past month. We compared them on time in Pompeii against time in transit, review volume and the star distribution behind each rating, group size, what is included, the realistic return time to Rome, and accessibility. We read the most recent reviews and every recent one to three star review for each tour, and checked every price, option, timetable and inclusion against the operator's current listing on November 3, 2026, converting US dollar prices to euros at that day's rate. We did not include tours that start in Naples, Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast, or Pompeii entry tickets sold on their own.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a day trip from Rome to Pompeii worth it?+
Yes, if you plan for a long day. Pompeii is about 240 km from Rome, so even the fastest guided tour by high-speed train takes about 9 hours, and coach tours take 12 to 13. You get about two hours with a guide in the ruins, which is enough for the main highlights but not the whole site.
How do you get from Rome to Pompeii for a day trip?+
On a guided tour, either by high-speed train to Naples (about 70 minutes) and a 30-minute minibus to the ruins, or by coach, about three hours each way. On your own, take a high-speed train to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana local train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, about 35 minutes and €3.30 each way. A standard Pompeii ticket costs €20.
How much is a Pompeii day trip from Rome?+
From €56 per person for a guided coach day, €92.99 to €121 for Pompeii with Sorrento or Positano by coach, €133 to €249 for the high-speed train tours, and €288 per person for two on a small-group Amalfi day with hotel pickup. All include return transport and the Pompeii ticket.
Can you do Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day from Rome?+
Yes. Five of the tours we compared combine them, from €99 with City Wonders to €288 per person for two with Welcome Italy. Expect a 12 to 13 hour day with about 90 minutes to two hours in Pompeii and one to three hours in Positano or Sorrento, depending on the tour and traffic.
What is the best day trip to Pompeii from Rome?+
Our pick is ItaliaTours' high-speed train tour with a winery lunch, rated 4.8 from 1,663 reviews, at about €213 for a 9-hour day. On a budget, City Wonders' coach day costs €56. For Pompeii and the coast together, Show Me Italy's Sorrento day is the best-rated budget option at 4.8.
How long do you get in Pompeii on a day trip from Rome?+
About two hours with a guide on most tours, and as little as 75 to 90 minutes on some combined Amalfi days. The exception is ItaliaTours' self-guided Pompeii Express, which gives you about five hours inside the site.
What should I bring on a Pompeii day trip?+
Photo ID, since Pompeii tickets are issued in each visitor's name, comfortable shoes for uneven stone paving, a hat and sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. Bring motion sickness tablets for the Amalfi Coast road, and snacks or breakfast on tours where lunch comes late or is not included.
Is a Pompeii day trip suitable for children or people with limited mobility?+
Children are welcome on all ten tours, with child prices on most. Mobility is harder: ItaliaTours, Walks and The Tour Guy say their tours are not suitable for wheelchairs or guests needing walking assistance, and Walks does not allow strollers. Welcome Italy's minivan tour with hotel pickup is the gentlest option; contact the operator first.
