A Leaning Tower of Pisa tour from Florence costs €39, €59 or €93 on the big coach tours, and only the €93 version gets you up the tower. We compare eight ways to do it, from the coach to a private driver or the train and a local guide.
What You Should Know
- A Leaning Tower of Pisa tour from Florence is usually a six-hour coach trip to Piazza dei Miracoli with a guided walk of the Cathedral, Baptistery and the tower from outside; climbing the tower is an add-on, not standard.
- The big coach tours leave from Piazzale Montelungo by Santa Maria Novella station at 08:00, 13:30 or 14:15, with about an hour on the road each way and roughly two hours in Pisa.
- The two largest operators use the same three prices: €39 is the coach only, with no guide and no tickets; €59 adds a guided tour of the square; €93 adds a timed slot to climb the tower.
- On the top pick the coach parks a 15 to 20 minute walk from the square, by reviewers' accounts, and children under 8 are not allowed up the tower on any of these tours.
Leaning Tower of Pisa Tours from Florence
A Leaning Tower of Pisa tour from Florence costs €39 to €93 on the big coach tours, and the price you pick decides what you actually do in Pisa: €39 is the coach and nothing else, €59 adds a guided walk of the square, and only €93 gets you up the tower. This guide compares eight ways to make the trip, including day tours from Florence, two private drivers, and the option of taking the train and joining a guided tour that starts in Pisa itself.

Back to Florence
Back at Montelungo about six hours after departure.
Based on how these tours run in practice, a half-day coach tour spends about two of its six hours on the road and about two in Pisa. What catches people out on the top pick is that the coach does not stop at the square: its reviewers describe a 15 to 20 minute walk from the coach park, with a few road crossings, before the guided part begins.
Whether two hours is enough splits reviewers. On the guided options, many find it plenty for the square, the photo and a drink; those who climb the tower and also want the Camposanto and museums are the ones who run short.
The meeting point at Piazzale Montelungo serves several coach companies at once, so look for your operator's sign and arrive by the check-in time. Gray Line states that latecomers cannot join or be refunded.
Best Leaning Tower of Pisa Tours from Florence
Six picks for the different ways people actually want to see Pisa. We weighted what you get on the ground in Pisa, and how reliably each tour has run in recent reviews, above the headline price.
Gray Line Florence: Half-Day Pisa Trip
The most reviewed of the Pisa tours from Florence we compared, at 4.4 from 2,047 reviews, and its recent reviews are in line with that record. Book the €59 guided option for the walk of Piazza dei Miracoli, or €93 to climb the tower. It leaves at 13:30, so it suits a morning in Florence first. The tour leader works in both English and Spanish, and the coach parks a flat 15 to 20 minute walk from the square.
Check availabilityCiao Florence Tours: Half-Day Excursion to Pisa
The same €39, €59 and €93 ladder, with a 4.6 lifetime rating and the only 08:00 departure among the coach tours, plus a 14:15 slot. The caveat is recent: six of its 40 reviews since September 1, 2026 are 1 or 2 stars, against about 6% across its lifetime, including a guide who did not appear and complaints about the coach.
Check availabilityCiao Florence Tours: Pisa & Lucca Day Trip
Nine hours, from €65 for the coach alone or €75 with guided walks in both towns, and €109 with the tower climb. Lucca adds its Renaissance walls and a tasting of buccellato, the town's traditional cake. It runs three days a week and had no 1 or 2 star reviews in September, though one recent guest wanted more free time in Lucca.
Check availabilityPrestige Rent: Private Half-Day Trip to Pisa
A driver collects you from your hotel and drops you at the square, then waits. There is no guide and tickets are extra, so it is transport rather than a tour; we wouldn't choose it for a first visit if you want the stories behind the square explained. For a group that already knows what it wants to see, it is competitive: €130.39 each for four and €82.58 each for eight, against €59 a head on the coach. For two it costs €222.53 each.
Check availabilityLet's Andiamo: Private Day Tour of Pisa and Lucca
€600 for a private minivan for up to eight, with hotel pickup and a driver-host who explains the history on the way. All 30 reviews are five stars, and one family travelling in summer singled out the air-conditioned van and door-to-door service. We'd choose this for a family of five or more in summer: at €120 each for five, it is door to door, against €59 each on the coach plus the walk from the coach park in the heat. Lunch and tower tickets are extra.
Check availabilityDiscoverypisa: Pisa Highlights Tour
If you are happy to take the train, this is the best-rated guided visit of the square at 4.7 from 503 reviews, for €42 or €81 with the tower. It includes the Cathedral and Baptistery with a guide, the Monumental Cemetery and museums on your own, and groups of up to 15 with headsets. We like this option for anyone who wants more than the photo: one recent coach-tour guest who climbed the tower ran out of time for the cemetery, which this tour builds in.
Check availabilityIs the Leaning Tower Climb Included?
Not unless you pay for it. On the two big coach tours from Florence, the tower climb is only on the top €93 option, and the €59 guided tour shows you the tower from outside. Neither private driver includes tickets, and the Italy on a Budget small-group tour lists the tower ticket as extra.
The rules are the same whichever tour you book:
- No children under 8: every listing that offers the climb bars under-8s, and Walks In Europe sets the limit at 9.
- Around 250 to 300 steps, no lift: Walks In Europe's listing gives 251, one recent guest counted 294, and the climbs run at a set time slot.
- Bags go in the cloakroom: bags and backpacks have to be left before you climb, and Discoverypisa advises allowing 10 to 15 minutes to check them in and another 10 to collect them.
- The Cathedral is now free: Ciao Florence's listing notes that on the busiest days the queue can make the interior impossible to visit, and shoulders and knees must be covered to go in.
We'd make sure to book a tower option from the start if the climb is the point of your trip: on the €39 coach-only option you would have to buy a ticket on the day, and one recent guest who planned to do exactly that ran out of time before the coach left.
Going by Train Instead
Regional trains link Florence's Santa Maria Novella station with Pisa Centrale, so you can skip the coach and book a tour that starts in Pisa. The two here are the best-rated guided visits of the square on this page: Discoverypisa at 4.7 from 503 reviews for €42, and Walks In Europe at 4.7 from 299 for €73, with groups of 15 and 12.
| Coach tour from Florence | Train + Pisa-based tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Included, from Piazzale Montelungo | You buy and time the train yourself |
| Price | €39 coach only, €59 guided, €93 with the tower | Train fare plus €42 to €98 for the tour |
| Guide | Included on the €59 and €93 options | Included in the Pisa tour, booked separately |
| Flexibility | Fixed: 08:00, 13:30 or 14:15, about two hours in Pisa | Your choice of day, train and time on the ground |
| Group size | Coach loads, with a guide at the square | Capped at 15 or 12 |
| Logistics | Easier: one meeting point, one booking | More work: station to square on your own |
| Best for | First-time visitors who want it handled | Independent travellers who want more time or a smaller group |
The trade-off is logistics. Pisa Centrale is on the far side of the old town from Piazza dei Miracoli, so allow time to walk across or take a local bus, and you buy and time the train yourself. In return you choose your own day and hours, and the groups are capped at 15 or 12. We'd book this route if the coach times do not suit you: the coach tours fix you to an 08:00, 13:30 or 14:15 departure and roughly two hours on the ground.
The Route: Florence to the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Interactive Map)
The coach tours and private drivers take the same road west: from Piazzale Montelungo, beside Santa Maria Novella station, onto the Fi-Pi-Li expressway that links Florence, Pisa and Livorno, and into Pisa from the south. It is about 86 km to Piazza dei Miracoli, and Mapbox puts the drive at 78 minutes without traffic, against the "about an hour" the operators quote. Coach tours then park outside the old town, which is where the walk to the square comes from.
| Leg | Approx. distance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Piazzale Montelungo to Piazza dei Miracoli by road | ~86 km | Fi-Pi-Li expressway; the route used by the coach tours and private drivers |
| Coach park to the square | 15 to 20 min on foot | As reported by Gray Line guests; flat, with a few road crossings |
| Pisa Centrale station to the Leaning Tower | ~1.7 km in a straight line | For the train option: walk north across the old town and the Arno, or take a local bus |
If you go by train, the two stations on the map are your start and end points, and the Pisa-based tours meet within walking distance of the square.
How Much Does a Pisa Tour from Florence Cost?
A Leaning Tower of Pisa tour from Florence costs €39 for the coach alone, €59 with a guided walk of the square, and €93 with the tower climb. A Pisa and Lucca day runs €65 to €109, a private driver €82.58 to €347.71 each depending on group size, and the small-group Vinci and winery day €184 to €214. Children aged 4 to 12 pay half on the coach tours, and under-4s travel free.
Coach only
Return coach from Florence and free time in Pisa, with no guide and no tickets. Fine if you only want the photo.
Guided, with or without the tower
The guided walk of Piazza dei Miracoli for €59, or €93 with a timed tower climb. The best value for most visitors.
Pisa plus Lucca or Vinci
Ciao Florence's Pisa and Lucca coach day from €65, or Italy on a Budget's small-group Pisa, Vinci and winery day at €184 to €214.
Your own driver
Prestige Rent's half-day from €82.58 each for eight, or Let's Andiamo's full Pisa and Lucca day at €600 per vehicle. Tickets extra.
For most visitors the €59 guided coach tour is the clearest middle ground: the €20 over coach-only buys a local guide for the square. Pay the extra €34 for the €93 option only if climbing the tower matters to you.
Pairing Pisa with Other Day Trips and Florence Sights
The afternoon coach tours leave Florence at 13:30 or 14:15, so a morning in the city fits before them: a timed Accademia Gallery tour to see David, or the Uffizi if you start early. For a full day out instead, several Cinque Terre day trips stop in Pisa on the way back, and our Florence walking tours comparison covers the city itself.
Our Take
Across the 270 reviews we read, the disappointments on these trips are rarely about Pisa itself; they come from what was booked: guests on the coach-only option expecting a guide, or a tower climb nobody paid for. Reading the option name before you pay matters more than which coach company you choose.
Tips for Your Pisa Tour from Florence
- Check which option you booked: the €39 price on both big coach tours is transport only. Guests who expected a guide on that option are behind some recent 1-star reviews.
- Arrive at Montelungo early: several coach companies share the meeting point, and Gray Line will not take or refund latecomers.
- Bring original ID: Gray Line requires it on the day.
- Cover shoulders and knees: it is required to enter the Cathedral.
- Wear shoes with grip: on Gray Line the walk from the coach park takes 15 to 20 minutes each way, and the tower's marble steps are narrow and worn smooth.
- Carry coins or a card for the toilets: public toilets near the square charge, some by token or card only, and reviewers note there is no toilet on the coach.
- Don't plan to add the climb on the day: on the €39 coach-only option, one recent guest who planned to buy a tower ticket in Pisa found there was not enough time.
- Don't promise young children the climb: under-8s are not allowed up the tower on any of these tours.
- Look after the audio guide: Gray Line charges €80 if one is lost.
- Visiting in June? Our Florence in June guide makes the case for a half-day Pisa trip over a twelve-hour Tuscany circuit once daytime highs reach 27°C.
- Cancel more than 24 hours out: the listings we checked on October 6, 2026 give a full refund for cancellations at least 24 hours before departure.
How We Selected These Tours
The Italy Trip Insider team compared every bookable way to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa from Florence on what changes the day: what each price option actually includes, whether the tower climb is in it, how long you get in Pisa, and how reliably each tour has run in recent reviews. Every listing is active and had reviews within the last six months when we checked on October 6, 2026. We left out one private Pisa and Lucca tour with no reviews in over a year, a second tower-only product from one of the coach operators that duplicates its main tour, and multi-stop days built around Siena, San Gimignano or the Cinque Terre, which have their own guides. The eight picks cover half-day coach tours, a Pisa and Lucca day, a small-group Vinci and winery day, two private drivers, and two guided tours that start in Pisa for travellers taking the train.
